One need not to be a great scholar of articulatory phonetics to understand the reason for such identifications: is the vowel for which the speech organs strive to realize the smallest possible resonating cavity toward the front of the mouth by pushing the bulk of the tongue toward the inside portion of the palate and by drawing in the lips the maximum against the gums for, in contrast, the bulk of the tongue is drawn backward and the lips are pushed forward in such a way that the resonating cavity is as wide as possible.
